Principles of Design: Contrast

Students learned composition, the Element of Art: Value, and the Principle of Design: Contrast. They applied this knowledge by creating value with three paint colors and achieving contrast with black and white oil pastels, making artistic choices in their compositions.

Jellyfish, resembling tiny umbrellas and often translucent, inhabit all oceans. A collection of jellyfish is known as a bloom. Many students chose to depict a bloom of jellyfish in their art, showcasing how these creatures employ their tentacles defensively by delivering stings to enemies.

We began the unit by reading the book ‘Keith Haring: The Boy Who Just Kept Drawing by Kay Haring. The students learned about Proportion and how to create a Keith Haring Inspired Figure break dancing. The students learned about Form and papier-mache.

Principles of Design: Pattern

Step into our gallery and marvel at the incredible self-portraits on display. Each artist began with a distinct pose, making their artwork truly unique. They brought their self-portraits to life using image transfer techniques, capturing a realistic likeness. Exploring the world of colors, they learned about primary, secondary, warm, cool, and analogous colors, which they skillfully applied to their paintings. Adding an extra touch of creativity, they incorporated patterns using lines and shapes.

Elements of Art: Shape, Color

The artists took a deep dive into learning about the lifelong art of Alma Thomas, who was best known for her colorful abstract paintings. She created art using short brushstrokes that gave her art a mosaic-like appearance. Inspired by her unique artistic style and space paintings, the artists created an out-of-this-world piece of art using drawing and collage techniques.
